Weed Control
General Information
A vigorous,
healthy turf is the best defense against weed invasion. Proper fertilization,
mowing and watering are the key ingredients for building a dense,
healthy lawn.
- Weeds can
be annual, bi-annual or perennial.
- Weeds fall
into two categories: grassy or broadleaf.
- Weeds will
readily invade sparse, poor quality turf.
- Weeds may
be removed mechanically by digging (all underground parts must
be removed) or chemically by applying a herbicide or lawn fertilizer
with herbicide.
Pre-Emergent
Weed Control - For Grassy Weeds
Particularly effective in controlling weeds like crabgrass, goosegrass,
poa annua, foxtail and barnyard grass.
Should be applied before weeds emerge from the soil.
Post
Emergent Weed Control - Broadleaf Weeds
Effectively controls dandelion, clover, chickweed, henbit, oxalis
and many other broadleaf weeds.
Apply when the weeds are actively growing.
Apply when the lawn is wet from dew or sprinkling, and when rain
is not anticipated for at least 48 hours.
Do not apply on newly planted areas until they have been mown at
least twice.
4
Steps to Effective Weed Control:
1. Identify type of weed or weeds causing the problem.
2. Use the proper herbicide to control your weed problem.
3. Apply at the recommended rate and appropriate time.
4. Always follow application directions from the product label.
Pre-Emergent
Must be controlled
prior to annual germination of seed.
Weeds include
annual grasses like crabgrass, goosegrass, Johnsongrass, foxtail,
etc.
Water-in after
application to create a barrier on the ground surface that does
not permit seed germination.
Post-Emergent
Must be controlled when weeds are young, tender and actively growing.
Weeds include
dandelion, henbit, chickweed, clover, oxalis, plantain, poison oak,
spurge, thistle etc.
Do Not water
in, avoid application when rain is expected. Weed control is accomplished
by absorption of the chemical into the weed’s system from
the leaves, usually a period of 24 - 48 hours.
DO NOT apply
when grass is under heat (generally 85 degrees plus) or drought
stress. If weed control is desired in these conditions. use product
at half rate.
